EDP4130 - Design and Technologies

Introduction for Year 3 students

Water for sale

Students will be required to research the negative impact that plastic water bottles have on our immediate surroundings.  With guidance from the classroom teacher, they will look at the processes involved in the production of plastic water bottles available for sale in the community.  Students will then spend time researching environmentally safe packaging for food and drink products.  By using this information, students will be required to design an environmentally friendly way to package water for sale in stores and supermarkets.  In groups, students will discuss how their new water container packages might reduce waste in and around the environment. Students will continue to work in groups to create a two minute presentation for the class using a PowerPoint.  Finally, students will be required to reflect upon their design ideas and establish if this design is suitable for sale in the community.

Here is your challenge.  As a current student of Sunshine State School, you are really, really upset about the amount of water bottles that end up in land fill.  So, you are going to make a sales pitch to the people who make water bottles to

"STOP MAKING PLASTIC BOTTLES".

Yes, "STOP MAKING PLASTIC BOTTLES".

How can you convince this big multi million dollar company to do this?

Hmm, that's a great question Mrs Paterson.

Well the answer is simple - you are going to invent an environmentally friendly way to package and sell water in supermarkets, the corner store and even here at the school tuckshop.

Check out the RESOURCES page for information.

You will also find the TASK SHEET and the RUBRIC.

Then, once you've done all the work, we are going to do a REFLECTION ACTIVITY to see how it all went.

Great work Year 3 - Earth is depending on you !!!

This resource is designed to run for a duration of 6 weeks and will give students the opportunity to harness their creative, innovative and imaginative ideas in a real-world situation.  The title of this unit is "Water for Sale" and students will be given the task of making real design choices by solving problems caused by plastic bottles.

Technology: Design and Technologies

Processes and Production Skills

Evaluate design ideas, processes and solutions based on criteria for success developed with guidance and including care for the environment ACTDEP017

Elaborations:

  • evaluating, revising and selecting design ideas, based on criteria for success and including consideration of ethics, social values and sustainability

  • reflecting on the sustainability implications of selected designed solutions

  • comparing the amount of waste that would be produced from different design and development options and the potential for recycling waste

reflecting on designed solutions to critique and assess suitability, sustainability and enterprise opportunities and determine how well they meet success criteria

Technology: Design and Technologies

Knowledge and Understanding

Recognise the role of people in design and technologies occupations and explore factors, including sustainability that impact on the design of products, services and environments to meet community needs (ACTDEK010)

Elaborations:

  • examining the suitability of a service or everyday system and proposing improvements, for example a water saving system for a bathroom at home.

  • investigating materials, components, tools and equipment, including by using digital technologies, to discover their characteristics and properties, how they can be used more sustainably and their impact in the future.

  • critiquing designed products, services and environments to establish the factors that influence the design and use of common technologies, for example the characteristics that contribute to energy-efficient cooking such as wok cooking; the suitability and sustainable use of particular timbers
