Ok Year 3 students - here is your next unit of work. You are going to take on the role of a Landscape Architect. I can hear you all thinking "What the?" Well, you're about to learn how these people can change the landscape, make something that was once pretty ordinary, extraordinary.
So, you will be working in groups to research what a Landscape Architect does, then head out into the school yard, look at areas that need improvement and draw up a sketch of the area.
Then we're going to do some research on some native trees and make up some column graphs with the information we've found.
Now, the fun stuff. We're going to make a video, yes, you heard me, a video that you will present to the class.
Now, let's get moving on this project. Head down to the 'Resources' page where you'll find all the information you'll need to get started.

Digital Technologies
Knowledge and Understanding
Identify and explore a range of digital systems with peripheral devices for different purposes, and transmit different types of data (ACTDIK007)
Elaborations:
-
Using different peripheral devices to display information to others, for example using a mobile device, interactive whiteboard or a data projector to present information.
Recognising that images and music can be transferred from a mobile device to a computer, for example using a cable to connect a camera and computer to upload images for a photo story.

Digital Technologies
Processes and Production Skills
Collect, access and present different types of data using simple software to create information and solve problems (ACTDIP009)
Elaborations:
-
Using different techniques to present data as information, for example creating a column chart in a spreadsheet by colouring cells to represent different items.
-
Improving the appearance and usability of data, for example using colour, headings and labelling of images to organise and accurately identify data.
-
Using software to sort and calculate data when solving problems, for example sorting numerical and categorical data in ascending or descending order and automating simple arithmetic calculations using nearby cells and summing cell ranges in spreadsheet or database software.
Exploring different online sources to access data, for example using online query interfaces to select and retrieve data from an online database such as a library catalogue or weather records.

Unit Plan
Students will take on the role of a Landscape Architect and use peripheral devices such as video camera to digitally document areas in and around the school that could be improved upon. Students will be required to research the occupation of a Landscape Architect and report on the importance of this role in and around our community.
Students will move out of the class and find areas in and around the school where they think improvements could be made to the environment and look at which native Australian trees could be planted there.
Students will be required to research native Australian trees and look at the different heights of trees, collect this data and present this information digitally to the class using a column graph
This unit will conclude with students presenting a two minute video presentation in groups to the class.
